Week 6 - Blog Assignment
To be quite honest, I have not been in many group situations
that paid much attention to the adjourning stage. It didn’t seem to matter whether or not the group
was high-performing or if the group had the clearest established norms. In my opinion, once the task was completed,
the group members have just seemed to drift off on their separate ways.
However, I have had one group that experienced a very
memorable adjourning stage. I had a
wonderful student teaching supervisor. She is an extraordinary mentor and a
fascinating person. Aside from being a
college professor and student teaching supervisor, she also gave tours at the
North Caroling Museum of Art. At the end
of our student teaching experience, she gave her ten student teachers a tour of
the museum. She singled out specific
pieces of art from different periods and would relate them to how being an
elementary teacher we would be able to influence the lives of children. We then went to her house for a dinner and to
share our final units. It was hard to
leave this group because we had been through so many courses together as well
as shared our student teaching experience together. All of us had been paired to experience a “dual”
teaching experience in which we spent six weeks in one lower elementary grade
and six weeks in an upper elementary grade.
Each pair was assigned to the same teachers, so that we could trade off
grade levels at the halfway point. In
this way, we could share ideas and strategies about what worked and didn’t work
well in the different classrooms and help each other design our final units. It was a very close-knit group. This final gathering was very memorable.
As we are getting closer to obtaining our master’s degree in
this program, I have given some thought as to how this group might
adjourn. At the end of our courses, I
enjoy how we use our blogs to express our gratitude for each other and to wish
each other good luck as we continue our studies. This is a great way to adjourn since we are a
part of an online community of learners.
However, as we near graduation, I look forward to meeting my classmates
face-to-face at the graduation ceremony.
We have all shared so much of ourselves in our discussion posts and
blogs that it would be nice to gather together to formally meet and to celebrate
our accomplishments.
I think adjourning is an essential stage of teamwork because
it gives the group time to celebrate their accomplishments, to acknowledge each
other’s role in the team effort, and to reach closure before going separate
ways.
Dianne,
ReplyDeleteI completely forgot about getting the chance to meet everyone at the graduation! Thank you for reminding me of this. I think one of the difficult things to online classes is that there is a lack of that face to face communication that can often bring people together a bit more. How do you think our classes would be different if we did have that face to face contact? I wonder if as a group we would be able to make a more personal connection with each other that would carry on to our future endeavors.
Dianne, the graduation ceremony is a great way to meet face-to-face. I had not considered that idea as I was not aware that our graduation would actually take place at a physical location. I still would not be able to attend. However, I enjoy reading, posting, and exchanging experiences via the blog. I miss and prefer face-to-face communications. I find online communications challenging, but necessary.
ReplyDeleteDianne,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that the last step "the adjourning step" is an important one, as it creates an everlasting effect of the members of the group. All the members who have worked so hard together will get to see the final result, celebrate their success, learn from their mistakes, and move on. I think it will be a great ending to our studies, to get together and meet each other in person. After all, we have been communicating for several months now and have gotten to share personal experiences with one another. Thanks for your post!
Dianne,
ReplyDeleteGratitude. Something that you briefly mentioned in your post. I just went to a quarterly leadership team building for our divsion and the entire meeting was dedicated to gratitude. I beleive that gratitude is essential in the adjourning stage of team work. I believe that paying forward your gratitude for ones experiences is essential in any team experiences regardless of their impact. Thank you for reminding me of this important piece of team work that I did not include.

Dianne, I am with you on the meeting face to face at graduation! The blogs at the end of each course is definitely inspiring, but as we approach our final course, I think the ceremony makes it official. I can't wait to see what city we will be in for graduation. I think as hard as we have worked, walking across the stage will be the icing on the cake! I totally agree that it would be nice to gather together and celebrate our accomplishments!
ReplyDeleteDianne,
ReplyDeleteThat is great that you had a good group experience. I also have not had very many group experiences, but when I have they always seemed pretty rocky. That sounds awesome to have everyone meet face to face at graduation. I have never walked in any of my graduations, and always say I will do it next time....I do not think that I will be continuing more education after this program, so I should finally walk when I graduate.
Dianne,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your experiences and your thoughts throughout this course. You input and feedback has set the standard for this University and Always pushes me to achieve more. Your work is exceptional and I appreciate begin included in your learning correspondence.
